For the fourth year in a row, Texas “needs assistance” complying with federal law to provide special education services to children with disabilities, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
Texas has earned the same rating every summer since 2016 under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) despite a push to improve student access to special education services in light of revelations the state had illegally capped how many children should get them.
“This year’s report shows that Texas is stuck in neutral in trying to correct the problems in our special education system,” said Steven Aleman, policy specialist with Disability Rights Texas, an advocacy group that closely follows special education. “It is urgent that local and state education officials focus on solutions and produce results.”
